“A time to tear down, and a time to build up” Ecclesiastes 3:3

Dear Friends

For nearly two years you have heard about our need to replace the shingles on the roof of the church. We have been careful and diligent, working with a roofing consultant, knowing that the requirements for a facility our size is significant.

At the congregational meeting held on November 19, 2023, we gave the go ahead for work to begin according to the approved bids. We have lined up financing and signed off on contracts.

“A time to tear down…”

That time is now. Work will begin on the roof on Monday, April 29. The work area will be fenced off and the job of removing all those aged shingles will begin. This will primarily be restricted to the northeast corner of the parking lot adjacent to the building. After repairs, vapor barrier, and insulation has been attended to, the new metal roofing will be installed. It may be a little noisy and messy at times but the long-awaited work is ready to begin.

“And a time to build up…”

As in the time has come to build up our reserved funds for the roofing project. The total cost will come in close to $400,000. We will ‘borrow’ from our own Heritage Fund. We will be receiving a low interest loan for half the costs from the United Church of Canada, and we will take out a loan from the Assiniboine Credit Union for the balance. We continue to seek out potential grant eligibility. But at the end of the day it is the congregation who pays for the roof.

We are asking you to consider a special gift to the church for the roofing project. The amount we can raise now will reduce the amount we need to borrow. If your gift comes over time, it will be just as appreciated and will be used for loan payments. When you make your contribution (by cheque or

e-transfer primarily), please indicate it is for the roofing project as we will need to continue to meet our obligations in operations for the 2024 budget. Thank you to those who have contributed in advance as we have already received close to $20,000 in donations.

Charleswood United Church is a vibrant and vital community entering its 2nd century of ministry. Please help us in this major effort. It is deeply appreciated.
